Celebrating Women Artists in Fairfield, Iowa: Their Work and Journey

By Visit Fairfield | July 19, 2024

Fairfield, Iowa, a town renowned for its vibrant art scene, is home to many talented women artists whose works and journeys inspire and captivate. These artists bring unique perspectives and skills to the local and wider art community, enriching Fairfield's cultural landscape. Let's shine a light on some of these remarkable women and delve into their creative processes, achievements, and contributions.

Joanie McGinnis: A Journey Through Color and Form

Joanie's vibrant, abstract paintings bring a burst of energy and color to the local art scene. Her "Jazz Impressions" series draws inspiration from the improvisational brilliance of jazz legends like Miles Davis and Stan Getz, translating their music into sweeping brushstrokes and dynamic shapes.
Growing up in Indiana, Joanie's artistic journey was nurtured by her mother and honed through years of study with various teachers. Initially experimenting with watercolors, she eventually embraced the freedom of abstract art. Influenced by Bill Teeple, she found her ideal medium in acrylics, allowing her to create layers of transparent colors reminiscent of her early watercolors.

Joanie's art is known for its bright, uplifting palette and instinctive movement, setting her apart from artists like Joan Mitchell and Jackson Pollock. Each canvas bursts with life, inviting viewers to experience the joy and spontaneity she pours into her work.
Her pieces can be found in collections and galleries across Iowa, Indiana, and California, including Fairfield's prestigious ICON Gallery. Joanie’s art is a celebration of color and emotion, designed to leave viewers feeling joy and happiness. For art lovers, her work is a must-see in Fairfield.

Wendy Read: Weaving Stories Through Textiles

Wendy Read's journey into fiber art began over 35 years ago, inspired by a rich family heritage of both professional and amateur artists. Learning under quilt teacher Kathryn Watts, Wendy discovered the artistic potential of textiles. Influenced by early art quilters like Nancy Crow and Michael James, and later by family friend Anna Williams, she embraced a freedom from traditional rules, allowing her creativity to flourish.

Today, Wendy's textile art incorporates a blend of sewing techniques learned in her youth, expanded with exotic fibers, materials, paints, and dyes. These diverse elements become her paint and canvas, with the tactile qualities of fibers playing a crucial role in her creative process. For Wendy, the sense of touch is as vital as sight in bringing her pieces to life.

Continuously exploring new techniques, Wendy’s work is a dynamic blend of tradition and innovation, inviting viewers to experience the texture and depth of her vibrant creations. For art enthusiasts, her fiber art offers a unique, sensory-rich experience that’s not to be missed.

Wendy Stegall: Merging Tradition and Innovation

Wendy Stegall's nonrepresentational paintings invite viewers into a dance of color and form. Inspired by a love of soft edges and the art of blending, Wendy’s work is a captivating interplay between sharp-edged forms and hidden shapes. Her pieces often feature geometric patterns and fine lines, with spontaneous, intuitive elements floating over layered colors, creating a dynamic performance on canvas.
With 25 years of classical Indian dance influencing her art, Wendy brings the ornate symmetry and fluidity of Kathak to her visual creations. This fluid language of geometry and flow is evident in her use of oil and acrylic paints, where she layers and scrapes back, or creates textures for paint to flow across.
Originally from Sacramento and Oakland, California, and Reno, Nevada, Wendy has lived in Washington, DC, Austin, Bermuda, and finally Fairfield, Iowa. Moving to Fairfield in 1980 to join the TM community, her 40 years of meditation practice have deepened her desire to express inner silence and flow through her art.

Wendy’s journey began with watercolor field paintings in her teens, characterized by dense patterns and opaque shapes. Despite her high school art teacher’s advice to use sweeping motions, Wendy’s intricate style persisted. In 2009, she returned to collage, incorporating dance and sacred images into layers of fabric, paint, and paper, continuing her exploration of abstract art.
For those who appreciate the blend of color, form, and movement, Wendy Stegall's art offers a unique, meditative experience that captures the essence of inner silence and the fluidity of life.

Engaging with Fairfield's Women Artists

Fairfield offers numerous opportunities for art enthusiasts to engage with the work of its women artists. Monthly events like the Fairfield 1st Fridays Art Walk provide a chance to meet the artists, view their latest works, and learn about their creative processes. For those unable to attend in person, many artists, including Joanie McGinnis and Wendy Read, maintain online galleries where their works can be viewed and purchased.

Supporting Women Artists in Fairfield

Supporting local artists is crucial for the continued vibrancy of Fairfield's art scene. Websites like Fairfield 365 and Visit Fairfield Iowa offer information on upcoming events and exhibitions, helping art lovers stay connected with the latest happenings. Purchasing art from local galleries and directly from artists' websites is another way to support these talented women.

A Trio of Artists

By Visit Fairfield | February 17, 2022

From now through April 2022, art lovers in Southeast Iowa are in for a treat. Three of the most talented and recognized artists in Fairfield will be showing their work at ICON Gallery. Titled “Contemporary Realism”, this show consists of Greg Thatcher’s award-winning yew tree drawings, John Preston’s agricultural landscapes, and Bill Teeple’s small realistic landscapes.

Greg Thatcher’s drawings represent hundreds of hours of dedication, focus, and concentration in one location. Yew trees, specifically the ones growing in St. Mary’s churchyard in Painswick, Gloucestershire, England, are the subjects of his work and he has been working on location since 1991.  The intricacy of his work draws you in to experience the transcendence of nature. It feels as if the more you look at these drawings, the more mystery you unfold.

Greg Thatcher Yew Trees #76

Watercolor master John Preston presents agricultural landscapes that are filled with life-like details to show off what he sees when looking out on Iowa fields or farms. His paintings are a reflection of life in Iowa and the landscapes he loves so much. The artist has been exploring big skies with vast fields for years now but is currently focused on contemporary aspects of agriculture from grain elevators to farming equipment. His most recent work has been almost exclusively painted on location, capturing a scene in its natural state, aiming to express a particular moment in time. You can find many examples of John’s watercolor and pastel work exhibited regionally or nationally - even internationally where they've been seen recently at exhibitions in Cambodia and Nigeria.

“Fat Man and Little Boy” 10.5x13.5

The third in this trio of exhibitors is Bill Teeple who created a new series called "Small Realistic Landscape Paintings." These small paintings depict realistic scenes and have taken him back to a genre of art that is meaningful to him. With many of the pieces sized at 3 x 4 inches, viewers can stand in awe of the amount of detail in each landscape.  Each realistic landscape painting shows masterful skill in oil painting and it’s hard to believe that anyone could capture so complete a scene on so small a canvas.

Bill Teeple Madison #2

If your journeys bring you to this part of Iowa, be sure to escape the winter by enjoying this exhibit.

This show runs from Feb 4 – April 23, 2022. Icon Gallery is located at 58 N. Main St on the Fairfield Square.

I Love Art

By Donna Cronce | June 21, 2021

I Love Art. The Planning. The Making, The Viewing. The Buying.

Sometimes I look for just the right piece for just the right place, but more often I find a piece that will evoke a memory of a particular place and time. It jogs that memory from the back of my mind to the front. It brings a smile to my face.

When I travel and visit a new place, I enjoy purchasing something from a local artisan. I have a beautiful stoneware soap dish from Flat Rock, NC, a silver ring from Phoenix, a Christmas Ornament from Myrtle Beach, a set of three prints from Gatlinburg, and the list goes on. If you are an art lover, don’t neglect our terrific local options; make sure to stop into the Fairfield Arts and Convention Center at 200 N Main Street.

The FACC has several art galleries. In the Main Gallery you will find an installation from a local Iowa artist. This show lasts for 2 months, and most of the pieces are available to purchase. Currently Andrea Van Wyk is showing her vibrant and colorful oil paintings. Make sure to take a really good look at her work, there are some wonderful hidden elements in the paintings.

In the Atrium Lobby – look up at the second story railing. There you will see some exquisite quilts. I can’t even imagine how long it takes to make those beautiful pieces. Look at the table tops. Each one is hand painted by co-founder of FACC Suzan Kessel. Each one is different and beautiful. Then take a moment to look at the amazing mosaic on the floor of the atrium depicting the clock tower of the Jefferson County Court House, which is just across the street.

In the corridor right off the Atrium before the Expo Hall is another artist exhibition. This one is smaller, from a local artist and also lasts for 2 months. The paintings currently on exhibit are by John A Schirmer, depicting Chicago and New York. The stunning paintings show people going about their day to day lives in the big city – full of hustle and bustle. His style is simplistic, but not simple. You know exactly what he is trying to depict, but there’s enough detail missing to let you fill in the blanks.

In this corridor, you will also find the Fairfield Arts Association Sales Gallery. This is MY favorite place. There is a space for artists to work and give classes. Classes were suspended due to Covid but are set to start again in June/July. Take a look at their website for the class schedule. Taking a class is a fun way to try something new and maybe light your artistic passion.

Members of the Fairfield Art Association also use this space to sell their art. There is something here for every taste and style. The gallery is beautiful, colorful and exciting. There is a wide variety of items for sale: scarves, pottery, glassware, jewelry, drawings, paintings – just about anything that you could think of. If you have any questions, just ask the artist in attendance. They’ll be more than happy to help you.

The FAA manages the art installations in the other galleries, and on the town square. You can find a large installation of 20 pieces around the Fairfield town square titled “2020 in 2021, A BETTER VIEW”.  Take a walk around the square and “SEE” if you can find them.

Supporting local artists is a great way to have a little piece of Fairfield. Prices are very wallet friendly – so bring home a memory that will last a lifetime.
