Unveiling a Timeless Tapestry

Get ready to be transported to a captivating bygone era at the Maasdam Barns in Fairfield. Local artist Katlynne Hummell Underhill has just completed a masterpiece—a 32-foot-wide mural that beautifully captures the charm of farm life from a century ago.

Commissioned by the Maasdam Barns Historic Preservation Committee, this vibrant mural pays homage to the last generation of horse farming. Imagine a stunning duo of majestic horses pulling a man on a disc plow, set against the iconic Maasdam Barns. In the background, a horse-drawn wagon carries a family, while the farm's owners, Glenn and June Gorman, proudly have their name displayed on the mailbox.

Consisting of eight panels, each measuring 4-by-8 feet, the mural was skillfully installed by committee members over the weekend of Nov. 4-5. The talented Katlynne then added her artistic touch, painting over the bolts and framing the masterpiece in black. And now, it's time for the grand reveal!

Join us on Friday, Nov. 17, at 4:30 p.m. to witness the dedication of this remarkable mural. As you admire the artwork, indulge in the warmth of freshly baked cookies and hot chocolate served by our friendly committee.

Tony Webb, president of the Maasdam Barns Historic Preservation Committee, explained the inspiration behind this awe-inspiring mural. "We wanted to add some color and vibrancy to the barns' surroundings," he said. Drawing inspiration from a previous mural in Eldon, the committee approached artist to create a unique masterpiece for Maasdam Barns.

Underhill used a combination of hand drawing and digital artistry to bring this mural to life. Starting with a hand-drawn sketch, she then digitized and enhanced the image using Photoshop. This meticulous process took approximately a month and a half, and to ensure its longevity, the mural has been protected with a coat of varnish, guaranteeing its vibrancy for 15-20 years.

The mural also pays tribute to the Gorman family, former long-time residents of the farm. Their name proudly adorns the mailbox, symbolizing their deep connection to this land. With the inclusion of the American bald eagle, Iowa's official state bird—the goldfinch—and nods to Dutch heritage with Black-eyed Susans and tulips, this mural is a visual symphony that celebrates both history and culture.

Strategically placed on the newer warehouse's north side, the mural is visible to patients at the Jefferson County Health Center and users of the Fairfield Loop Trail.

Join us at Maasdam Barns and immerse yourself in this remarkable piece of art.
