Planning Your Visit
When visiting the Abingdon Heirloom Peony Farm, consider these tips to make the most of your trip:
- Timing is Everything: Aim to visit during the cooler parts of the day to enjoy the blooms in comfort. Early mornings or late afternoons are ideal for softer light and fewer crowds. The farm is open from 10 AM - 7 PM
- What to Bring: Pack a camera. Many visitors find that spending time in the serene surroundings is a perfect way to relax and connect with nature
- Dress Appropriately: While peonies aren’t known for attracting bees, it’s wise to wear comfortable clothing and suitable footwear for walking around the farm. Sun protection is also a must on bright days.
- Cut Your Own Blooms: You can cut your own flowers for just $1 per stem. (CASH ONLY) Bring your own cutters and a bucket to safely transport the precious blooms back home.
Storing Your Peonies for Year-Round Splendor
At Abingdon Heirloom Peony Farm, you can cut your own peonies for just $1 a stem. But did you know you can also save these blooms to enjoy later in the year? Here’s how to store your freshly cut peonies to ensure they remain beautiful for weeks or even months.
The Marshmallow Stage
For optimal storage, cut your peonies when the buds are soft, at what's known as the 'marshmallow stage'. This ensures they are just right for refrigeration and will bloom beautifully when you're ready to display them.
Preparing for Storage
- Trim and Clean: Cut the stems to the desired length, typically about 12-16 inches, and remove most of the leaves to prevent moisture loss and potential rot.
- Wrap for Protection: Wrap the stems in newspaper or clear plastic wrap. This helps to avoid moisture condensation that can lead to decay.
- Refrigerate: Place your wrapped peonies in a plastic bag and lay them flat in the refrigerator. Ensure there’s no excess moisture in the bag as this could damage the buds.
Longevity
Stored this way, peonies can last several weeks to three months in the refrigerator. When you’re ready to enjoy your peonies, remove them from the fridge, trim the stems, and place them in tepid water. They should bloom within a day or two, bringing a touch of spring freshness to your home any time of the year!

The Abingdon Heirloom Peony Farm is more than just a destination; it's an experience that enchants the senses and soothes the soul. Mark your calendars and plan your visit to this splendid floral retreat. Don’t miss out on one of Iowa’s best-kept secrets, where beauty blooms in the springtime air and every corner promises a new discovery!
