Juneteenth, the Moment of Freedom
By Visit Fairfield | June 17, 2022
One of the most important dates in American history is Juneteenth, which commemorates the day in 1865 when the last slaves in America were finally freed. For many African Americans, Juneteenth is a time to reflect on the long struggle for freedom and equality. One of the most significant events in this struggle was the Underground Railroad, a network of secret routes and safe houses that helped slaves escape to freedom. The Underground Railroad was organized by brave men and women who risked their lives to help others achieve liberty.
Fairfield's contributions to the Underground Railroad are highlighted in this short video of Mark Shafer, curator at the Carnegie Museum. Mark discusses the new exhibits at the museum that feature Fairfield citizens during this tumultuous time in history.
