Before you pack the bag.

The questions visitors usually ask before booking - answered honestly.

How far is Fairfield from major cities?

About 1.75 hours southeast of Des Moines, 4 hours from Kansas City, and 4.5 hours from Chicago. It's close enough to be a genuine weekend trip;  far enough to actually feel away.

Where do we stay?

Fairfield has a solid mix of options including boutique B&Bs, a handful of well-reviewed hotels, and cabin, camping, and RV options just outside of town. Booking 2–3 weeks ahead is recommended for weekends.

Is there enough to do, really?

This is the question everyone asks, and it's the one they stop asking the moment they arrive. The arts scene, food, wellness offerings, and outdoor options are genuinely impressive for a town this size. The guide has more than you can do in a single weekend, intentionally.

What's the best time of year to visit?

Every season has something going for it. Summer is the highlight and brings the farmers market and outdoor trails. Fall is spectacular for color and harvest events. Spring is quiet and beautiful. Even winter has its charm. Think cozy studios and warm restaurants with almost no crowds.

Is one night enough, or do we need two?

One night works if you're keeping it focused. Two nights is the sweet spot. That's when the trip stops feeling rushed and starts feeling like a real escape.

Do we need a car?

For getting to Fairfield, yes. Once you're there, the town itself is very walkable — the Square, galleries, restaurants, and several wellness spots are all within easy walking distance. For the outdoor itinerary, you'll want to drive to the trailheads
