Our Story;

We began our journey by introducing authentic Ethiopian food to the Fairfield Community as food vendors at Fairfield’s Saturday Farmers Markets in the summer of 2010. While working as vendors we received feedback from our customers that they would like to see us open a restaurant so they can enjoy our food any day of the week. With that in mind, we received the opportunity to serve at the Holy Spirit Church on Thursdays during lunch. This was a small step forward however, we knew we wanted to give our customers more. In 2015, we began serving at the Fairfield Arts and Convention Center 5 days a week. Our service has attracted customers not only in Fairfield but from all over Iowa. Sharing the Ethiopian food and culture with the Fairfield community has been a great joy, and we are thrilled to continue to do so.

Our most popular dish?

1. Chick peas dish ( Cholas). This dish is delicious, prepared with some unusual ingredients such as freshly roasted pomegranate seeds and roasted cumin seeds, and Tamarind.
2. Rasmalai dessert. Prepared with freshly prepared with cottage cheese, rose water, saffron, cardamom, almonds and sugar
My Story:
People come to my cafe because they want to experience freshly prepared authentic Indian dishes in which the main ingredient is love! There is a certain degree of craftsmanship that goes into preparing Indian food that begins with a prayer, grinding fresh spices, and slow cooking. The Chef (Sabita) has a Ph.D. who is a professor in business with a passion for cooking. So, this is a labor of love! Food prepared by a person who loves cooking always tastes better than one that is prepared by someone who is just doing a job!
I mostly enjoy cooking authentic traditional recipes instead of creating new recipes. Over the years, the Indian diet has undergone a transformation because of changing lifestyles and the easy availability of packaged foods. The result: many dishes that were once prepared regularly at home have been forgotten, replaced by meals that are quick to the table. My focus will continue to be on reviving these traditional Indian recipes.

The Cider House

The Cider House

Traditional American Food and Hard Cider

(641) 980-0423

The menu at the the Cider House focuses on simple pub fare, with burgers, fish and chips, French fries, potato salad, and coleslaw. “We have a very simple menu,” says co-owner Cole Fishback. “It’s very American cuisine based, very Iowa based. It’s simple, but high quality, well made, and satisfying.”

Everything is made fresh, from scratch. The beef for the burgers is all local, grassfed beef, grown and processed in Jefferson County. Fishback has created a veggie burger loved by vegetarians and meat eaters alike, and hopes to perfect a vegan, gluten-free version. Most things on the menu are gluten free.

The Cider House serves a range of drinks, including their in-house hard cider, another cider brewed in Iowa, beer from  Kalona and the Amana Colonies, and a variety of whiskeys.

Johnny Clock Museum

A unique opportunity to see wood craftsmanship at its finest awaits the visitor to the Johnny Clock Museum located just outside the town of Lockridge. This museum is owned and operated by John and Pat McClain and contains many unusual carvings which also just happen to be functioning clocks. What makes this so intriguing is that the artisan(John) works not from blueprints but from ideas formulated in his head. Since his youth, John was dyslexic and unable to draw plans to paper but his memory of his past is crystal clear and his ability to carve in wood brings those memories to life in the form of decorative clocks. Well over 100000 + hours of work are displayed in the ever-expanding collection. The museum is easy to find just off newly Highway 34 halfway between Fairfield and Mt Pleasant and it will also give you a chance to see the town of Lockridge (named for the ridges over Lick and Wolf creeks which appear to “lock” on the map. So if you are looking for a good “time” and something new to do, take the “time” to see the “time” at the Johnny Clock Museum.
