Visit the Freedom Rock, featuring a mural of Fairfield’s own Civil War hero, Mehitable Woods. Her story is one of determination and bravery, known for making 13 trips across enemy lines to deliver supplies to the troops. This vivid tribute also honors area veterans and tells powerful stories through paint and patriotism. It is located on the Jedfferson County Courthouse lawn. The courthouse itself is worth a look - made in the stylish Richardsonian Romanesque style, the courthouse design centered on a 142-foot high corner clock tower. Look for the terra cotta bas-relief sculpture on the west wall depicting an allegory of Blind Justice, flanked by Harmony and Strife.
-
Just around the corner, find the Bonnifield Cabin in Bonnifield Park—Iowa’s oldest 2-story log cabin (1838), built before Iowa was even a state. The interior is off limits for now but it's still a great place to imagine pioneer life and snap that perfect rustic selfie. By the way, the city of Fairfield was named in this cabin during a gathering of early citizens and state officials.

Head back into town for a final bite or coffee at your favorite spot. (Shokai, Fairfield Diner, and Istanbul Grill are often open Sundays, but double-check hours.)

Before you go, take a final stroll on the Fairfield Loop Trail or stretch your legs in Jefferson County Park. It’s the ideal way to wind down a weekend full of stories, surprises, and small-town magic.
