Fairfield Family Itinerary

12 Ways to Tire Out Your Kids (In the Best Way)

Let’s be honest.
Sometimes the goal of a family trip isn’t relaxation. It’s… strategic exhaustion.

Fairfield just happens to be very good at that.

Wide open spaces, low-pressure activities, and just enough novelty to keep kids curious (without overwhelming anyone). This is your go-to list of things to do when you want fresh air, happy kids, and a quiet car ride home.

Run Wild (Without You Having to Chase Them the Whole Time)

Fairfield Loop Trail
📍 Multiple access points (easy start: B Street Trailhead or Chautauqua Park)
🕒 Open daily, dawn to dusk

This 16-mile loop connects parks all around town, but you don’t need to commit to the full thing. Pick a section and go. Crushed limestone paths, bridges, prairie, woods, and just enough variety to keep kids moving.

Parent tip: Start at B Street Trailhead for an easy, family-friendly stretch.

Chautauqua Park Playground
📍 E Burlington Ave., Fairfield, IA
🕒 Open daily, dawn to 10 PM

Playground + open space + trail access = easy win.
There’s enough room here for kids to roam while you sit for a minute and question your life choices (in peace).

Older kids? Let them try their hand at disc golf.

Jefferson County Park
📍 2003 Libertyville Rd, Fairfield, IA
🕒 Open daily, dawn to dusk

Big open park energy. Trails, shaded areas, and space to run without boundaries. Great for picnics or letting kids burn off that “we’ve been in the car too long” energy.

Add Wheels = Instant Upgrade

Bike the Loop Trail
📍 Start at B Street Trailhead or any park access point
🕒 Dawn to dusk

If your kids have bikes or scooters, this is where things get good. Long stretches where they can ride ahead (a little), and you can actually enjoy the scenery.

Good to know:

  • Surface is crushed limestone (skip the skinny tires)
  • Mostly flat and beginner-friendly
  • At this time there are no bike rentals in Fairfield

Fairfield Skate Park
📍 OB Nelson Park, West Fillmore Avenue and South 2nd Street, Fairfield, IA
🕒 Open daily, dawn to dusk

Best for older kids who need something a little more fast-paced.
Also a great place to sit and pretend you’re not mildly concerned.

Nature, But Make It Fun

Nady Prairie
📍1205 N B Street, Fairfield, IA
🕒 Open daily, dawn to dusk

Short trails, wide open views, and plenty of “what is that?” moments.
Perfect for younger kids or short attention spans or who aren’t in it for a long hike.

Creek Stomping (Unofficial, But Essential)
📍 Look for access points near parks or along the Loop Trail

No signage. No schedule. Just rocks, water, and kids fully committing to getting wet.

Parent tip: Bring extra shoes. Not optional.

Jefferson County Park Nature Center
📍 2003 Libertyville Rd, Fairfield, IA

When “being outside” needs a quick indoor upgrade. Watch birds, say hello to a snake, and get a close-up look at a turtle doing its thing underwater. It’s equal parts educational and “wait, that’s actually cool.”

Creative Energy Counts Too

Downtown “Find It” Challenge
📍 Fairfield Square

Turn downtown into a game:

  • Find the weirdest sculpture
  • Find something colorful
  • Find something you don’t understand

You’ll get way more mileage out of this than you expect.

Slightly Unexpected (Which Kids Love)

Maasdam Barns
📍 2200 W Burlington Ave, Fairfield, IA
🕒 Open during events / 2nd Saturdays (check schedule)

Massive draft horses + big barns + wide-open space.
This is one of those stops kids remember.

Fairfield Farmers Market (Seasonal)
📍 Fairfield Square
🕒 Saturdays, May–October, mornings

Let them pick something. A treat, fresh fruit, something slightly questionable.
It turns a quick stop into an experience.

Carnegie Historical Museum
📍 112 S Court St, Fairfield, IA
🕒 Tues–Fri 9 AM–4 PM, Saturdays by appointment

Stuffed penguins. A buffalo head. Civil War artifacts.
It’s a little bit of everything, and somehow that’s exactly what makes it fun.

This isn’t a “walk quietly and read every sign” kind of place. It’s a “wait… why is that here?” kind of experience. Kids will bounce from one display to the next, asking questions you probably don’t have the answers to. (That’s part of the charm.)

Refuel (Because You’ll Need It Too)

Pizza, Tacos, or Patio Stops
Places like Taco Dreams, Torinos or other casual spots make it easy. No stress, no pressure, just good food and space to sit.

Taco Dreams
📍 400 S 4th Street, Fairfield, IA
🕒 Lunch  M-F 8-2; Sat 8-2

Fast, casual, and very kid-friendly. Easy win when everyone’s hungry now and no one wants to wait. Bonus: plenty of flavor options, so even picky eaters can usually find something.

Torino’s Pizza & Steak House
📍 105 W Broadway Ave, Fairfield, IA
🕒 Dinner

A solid sit-down option when you’re ready to slow things down for a minute. Pizza, pasta, and plenty of space to reset before heading back out.

Ice Cream Break (Non-Negotiable)
You made it this far. Everyone deserves it.

Scream Ice Cream Shop
📍 110 N. Main Street, Fairfield, IA
🕒 Seasonal hours (typically afternoons & evenings)

This is not optional.
After all that running, biking, climbing, and negotiating… this is your reward stop.

Classic ice cream shop energy, generous scoops, and the kind of place that officially signals: you need a reward today.

The Dairy Bar
📍 1002 W Burlington Ave, Fairfield, IA 52556
🕒 Open 11 AM – 9 PM, Wednesday–Monday

A true throwback stop. Ice cream, chili dogs, corn dogs… the kind of place where no one’s asking about nutrition and everyone’s happy about it.

Perfect for a quick stop, a casual dinner, or one last treat before heading out of town.

Big Acai Bowls
📍 61 S. Court St., Downtown Fairfield
🕒 M-F 10 am - 6 PM, S-s 10 AM - 5 PM

When you want something that feels a little lighter (or at least pretend healthy). Smoothie bowls, fresh fruit, and bright flavors that still feel like a treat.

Good option for a midday recharge that won’t slow everyone down.

Let Them Burn the Last Bit of Energy

Live on the Square (Summer)
📍 Fairfield Square
🕒 Select evenings, summer

Free outdoor concerts where kids can move, dance, and exist without being told to “be quiet.”

Fairfield Municipal Band
📍 Central Park Stage
🕒 Tuesday evenings, summer

Old-school charm. Bring a blanket, let the kids wander a bit, and enjoy a slower pace.

Pro Tips for Parents (You’re Welcome)

  • Bring bikes or scooters if you can
  • Pack a change of clothes (seriously)
  • Snacks = fewer negotiations
  • Start with outdoor stuff first, save indoor for later
  • Don’t overplan… the best moments happen between stops
