A Place to Grow – the Evolution of Farming in Jefferson County, Iowa, gives unique insight into the people who have worked the soil over thousands of years in Southeast Iowa and explores the cumulative impact farming has had on the land and the people of this small Midwestern community. A Place to Grow reveals ancient Native American farming practices and the women seed keepers that developed them. Audiences will learn about the evolution of small family farms by early settlers, the impact of the modern science on large agriculture operations as well as organic and sustainable farming practices here.

Telling this story will be the farmers of Jefferson County and southeast Iowa. The main focus of this documentary will be the soil itself…and the stewardship of it by those who have reaped its benefits. Rich, dark, unctuous and alive, Iowa soil has long been the envy of agriculturalists worldwide. This documentary will bring to life the generations of families who have risked everything to stake their claim to this precious land and the legacy they have left today’s young farmers.

This film will bring to light the similarities and distinctions between the diverse farming methods utilized throughout time in this particular area. It will reveal for the first time on film the interconnectedness, neighborliness and interdependency of area farmers that few are privileged to see. Most importantly, A Place to Grow will focus on the common denominator among all our local farmers – be it a small organic farmer or a multi-generational family farming thousands of acres; that is community, family connectivity and the underlying values and traditions of the farming community in this area.

Many voices will contribute to the telling of this story. You will hear from local farmers, state historians, ag specialists and experts in Ioway Native American farming. Local century and heritage farms will be featured.

Over 100 local volunteers have come together to research, investigate and document this important part of our history which may be quickly disappearing. Through on-camera interviews and stunning interview and drone footage, the audience will gain a fresh perspective of how Jefferson County’s landscape was formed. They will also meet members of the local farming community in a way most have never seen.

Originally designed specifically for the residents of the Fairfield, Iowa community as a unique and fun way to understand and appreciate their special heritage, this documentary on the history of farming in southeast Iowa is an important film for everyone who cares to better understand our food supply.
