Event Details

RAGBRAI, largest bike-touring event in the world, is coming to Fairfield on July 25th. RAGBRAI, The Register’s Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa, is an annual seven-day bicycle ride across the state. Heading into its 47th year, RAGBRAI is the oldest, largest and longest recreational bicycle touring event in the world. With an estimated 10,000 riders coming to town, RAGBRAI is the largest tourism event the community will experience. The last time Fairfield was a host community was in 2013, during which time the riders and local residents collaborated to establish a Guinness World Record for the largest gathering of people wearing false mustaches (with almost 3,000 people participating).
Each overnight community establishes a theme for their event and this year’s Fairfield committee has selected the theme “Geared for Weird”, a Steampunk/glow party mashup. Josie Hannes of Josie Hannes Design is behind the creative logo which includes elements of the Steampunk genre such as airships, gears, and steam-powered bikes. Steampunk is a genre of science fiction that has a historical, Victorian setting and typically features steam-powered machinery rather than advanced technology. This theme offers a wide variety of possibilities for decorating and costuming. RAGBRAI Director, T.J. Juskiewicz commented that Fairfield’s theme is delightfully unique and will be fully embraced by the riders, many of whom enjoy participating in the themes.
“We are so excited for this theme” commented committee member Tammy Dunbar, “The Steampunk theme allows for lots of creativity and will become the unifying element for all of our signs, t-shirts and print material. And speaking of t-shirts, we are in the process of designing them. We hope to have them available to the public in April.”
“It truly takes a village to make this event successful”, noted committee member Michael Halley, ” we currently have 48 people serving on various organizing committees. They are meeting weekly to arrange details like electrical needs, camping, food and vendors and more. Our goal is to make this a successful event, not only for the riders but for the community as well.”
Individuals wanting more information about the event are encouraged to visit the group’s Facebook page, Fairfield RAGBRAI 2019, or email info@fairfieldragbrai.com. The Fairfield RAGBRAI website will be live soon and will have all the details about the event, including ways that local residents can participate and help with the event
