LIGHT WAVES: MOMENTS OF BEING
David Kupferman Artist Statement:
This new series of paintings was started last August. It was the basis of a generous grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, part of the American Artist Rescue Plan thru The Iowa Arts Council. The purpose of the grant was to create a new, positive cultural wave in society.
*Painting for me is a sacred ritual that acts as a bridge between infinite inner Being and the outer manifestation of the art. My paintings are a reflection of my daily meditations expressing the flow of the Unified Field of consciousness that underlies all of creation. Inner Being is that eternal presence that radiates Light Waves of peace and harmony throughout the universe.
These lyric abstract paintings are spontaneous improvisations on basic compositions and color schemes. They are informed by both Eastern and Western aesthetics and philosophy integrating the two. I often listen to improvisational Indian ragas or modern jazz when I paint.
My art becomes a spontaneous interdisciplinary performance as I improvise visually along with the music. It keeps
the flow moving. The paint is very wet and I just go with the flow and the painting evolves into a unique life of its own with a synergy that is created when all the elements are balanced.
Sometimes I add linear structures with china markers when it is dry to add a compositional counterpoint to the fluid gestural shapes. Some of the work have landscape references inspired by the wide open skies of Iowa with their dramatic sunsets and my many summers on Cape Cod by the ocean.
Hopefully, the viewer feels those transformative Light Waves of joy and expansion in these Moments of Being feeling the wonder of oneness.
*The 1st two galleries at ICON are showing the new series from over 50 paintings done this season and in the third gallery space are earlier works
