Winter Bird Watching
By Visit Fairfield | January 10, 2024
Winter is a season that’s often associated with staying indoors near the fireplace, reading books, and cozying up with blankets. However, Southeast Iowa offers an entirely different kind of winter activity – birdwatching. This outdoor activity guarantees fun sightings of diverse species of birds that will leave you in awe. Whether you’re an avid birdwatcher or are looking for a new hobby to embrace during winter, this post will provide you with all the information, tips, and tricks you need to carry out a successful birdwatching adventure in Southeast Iowa.
The types of birds you can find in Southeast Iowa during winter are fascinating, to say the least. Some of the most common birds you’ll find include cardinals, blue jays, titmouse, woodpeckers, chickadee, and goldfinches. You’ll undoubtedly be amazed at their stunning colors and behaviors. Use the attached bingo card to track and identify them as you explore your surroundings.
Going on a walk on the Fairfield Loop trail during winter could lead to vastly different kinds of bird sightings, which would not be apparent from your backyard. Consider visiting and exploring various protected areas in Southeast Iowa, such as Cedar Creek Wetlands and Cedar View Trail, or the Neff Wetlands, adjacent to Lamson Woods, known for their bird population.
To take your birdwatching a notch higher, consider setting up a bird sanctuary in your yard. To attract birds to your yard, add a seed or suet feeder. Usually, different birds prefer different types of seeds, so make sure you have a variety of them, including sunflower seeds, peanuts, thistle, and suet. Ensure that you place the feeders in a strategic place, where there’ll be no obstruction, and birds can quickly spot them and access them.
Place a shallow water dish and a seed tray somewhere safe, add sticks to the water dish, so the birds can perch on them, and create a haven for the birds to bask in all winter long. As a result, you’ll not only enjoy the birds, but you’ll also be helping them survive the harsh cold winter.
Winter birdwatching is indeed a unique experience that's both educational and entertaining. With the tips we have shared in this blog, you can embark on a birdwatching adventure with family and friends. So, grab your binoculars, fill up your bird feeders, and launch into Southeast Iowa's magical birdwatching adventure today. Happy Birdwatching!
