For those who want to combine their love of riding with a guided adventure, the Dirt Orcas Summer Classic is an event not to be missed.  Currently held in September, this annual adventure motorcycle ride takes participants through some of the best dirt and gravel roads in Southeast Iowa, offering a unique way to explore the region’s back roads and hidden gems.

The idea for the Dirt Orcas Summer Classic began with a simple desire of event organizer Paul Strubell: to create an adventure riding event similar to the BMW GS Safari held in Australia.  Thus, the Dirt Orcas Summer Classic was born, offering an accessible, yet equally exhilarating, adventure ride through the picturesque landscapes of Iowa.

What sets the Dirt Orcas Summer Classic apart is its focus on staying off the pavement as much as possible, giving riders a true sense of adventure as they navigate the backroads of Iowa. If you’re new to the area or just looking for a guided experience, this event is the perfect way to discover all that Southeast Iowa has to offer​.

What to Expect: The Ride and Its Routes

The Dirt Orcas Summer Classic isn’t just about the destination; it’s about the journey. The route is meticulously planned to keep riders on public dirt roads as much as possible. These B-roads offer a level of adventure riding that is hard to find elsewhere in the state. They weave through rolling hills, lush farmland, and past serene rivers, offering stunning views and plenty of opportunities to connect with nature.

"The ride travels over only public roads. We prefer dirt "B-Roads" and try to stay on those as often as we can. They are great experiences and the best form of adventure riding we have here in Iowa. We link those great roads together with gravel roads. Only running on pavement when necessary.
While the route is designed for adventure and dual sport motorcycles, it would also be a great ride for anyone with a gravel bicycle looking for a challenge. We utilize two campgrounds on the Dirt Orcas ride, but it passes by four state parks and near many county parks so it would accommodate a great bikepacking trip over Eastern Iowa. During the driest summer months it can also be driven in a vehicle with 4x4 or AWD, but honestly I tend to discourage people from doing this because the bigger vehicles tend to impact the roads in a way motorcycles do not. It's important to remember that even though these are public roads, they are basically only used by the agricultural community and exist to allow them to access fields."

Another must-ride is the Grant Wood Scenic Byway, named after the famous American artist who was inspired by the Iowa landscape. This 80-mile route takes you through gently rolling hills, past iconic locations like the American Gothic House and the historic town of Stone City.
