Kick off your adventure with a trip to Bonnifield Cabin, built way back in 1838. This isn’t your average rustic cabin — it's literally the oldest two-story log house in Iowa. Picture pioneer life, but cooler. The Bonnifield family made this cabin their home, church, and even hotel for some big-time guests (we’re talking politicians and judges rolling through). You can almost feel the frontier energy as you walk around this cabin.  The interior is not accessible for touring except on special occasions but the exterior makes for great selfies! Located in Waterworks park on N B St.

Next up, head over to Maasdam Barns for a peek at how farming got some serious improvements, thanks to Fairfield entrepreneurs and inventors. These barns aren't just pretty — they’re tied to the Louden Machinery Company, which totally changed the game for farmers in the early 1900s. It’s basically a monument to agricultural innovation, and the best part? They used to breed champion draft horses here. Explore the barns, learn some farming hacks, and maybe leave feeling like you could raise a few horses yourself (or, ya know, just post about them) Located on Hwy 1 South next to the Jefferson County Health Center on the south side of town. The Barns are open for viewing inside on the 2nd Saturdays May - Nov. The rest of the year you can stroll around the exterior and enjoy the murals and posted info about the barns.

When you’re recharged, make your way to the Carnegie Historical Museum, housed in Fairfield’s old Carnegie Library. Fun fact: this was the first of over 1,600 Carnegie libraries in the U.S.! Inside, you’ll find everything from Native American artifacts to displays about Fairfield’s role in the Underground Railroad. The mix of old-school architecture and history overload makes this spot the ultimate stop for history buffs and casual learners alike.

On the courthouse grounds, you’ll find the Freedom Rock, a massive patriotic mural honoring veterans. (Located in front of the Jefferson County Courthouse, north of the downtown square). If you’ve never seen one of these before, they're pretty wild — part of a statewide project to paint Freedom Rocks in all 99 counties. Fairfield’s rock also gives a shoutout to local Civil War heroine, Mehitable Woods. It’s a beautiful tribute, and honestly, it’s impossible not to be moved when you hear her story

7. Chill at Café Paradiso: Perfect End to the Day

Wrap up your historical adventure at Café Paradiso, Fairfield’s favorite coffee spot. Nestled in a cozy old downtown building, it’s the perfect place to reflect on the day’s finds while sipping a latte. The mellow vibe is just what you need after a day of exploring the past — grab a comfy chair, pull out your journal (or just scroll through your photos), and soak it all in.
