Ways to Fall for Fairfield

By Visit Fairfield | February 3, 2026

Ways to Fall for Fairfield (Even if You're Not Dating Anyone)

Who says Valentine’s Day has to be about someone else?

Whether you’re single, self-partnered, over it, or just looking for a new kind of February fun, Fairfield is the kind of place that makes you feel good—no date night required. Romance is great, sure, but so is recharging, reconnecting with yourself, and doing something that makes your heart beat a little happier.

So this season, forget the fancy prix fixe menus and pressure to make everything perfect. Instead, fall for Fairfield—on your own terms.

Here are a few soul-filling, heart-happy ways to do just that:

🌅 Watch the Sunset at Bonnifield Lake

It’s quiet. It’s peaceful. It glows.
Pack a thermos, pull on your favorite beanie, and find a spot to take it all in. No filters needed. Just nature doing what it does best.

💐 Buy Yourself Flowers

There’s no rule that says you have to wait for someone else to show up with roses. Head to the Fairfield Farmers’ Winter Market (check dates!) or pop into Petal Flower Boutique and treat yourself to a little floral magic. Want to get creative? Take a flower-arranging class and leave with a bouquet and bragging rights.

🎨 Take Yourself on an Art Tour

Fairfield’s art scene is as independent as it gets. Stroll through ICON Gallery, duck into Freeform or Wege Galleries, and keep your eyes open for murals and sculpture tucked into surprising corners around Downtown. Make it an afternoon. Or a slow hour between coffee and cocktails.

📚 Book a Solo Stay

Find a cozy Airbnb or check into a boutique room downtown. Leave the to-do list at home. Bring that book you've been meaning to read. Order takeout from Taco Dreams or try something new from Fairfield’s internationally inspired restaurants (Vietnamese pho? Ethiopian Injera? Yes, please). You don’t have to share your fries unless you want to.

🍽 Try Something New for Dinner

Fairfield’s food scene isn’t trying to be trendy—it just is. Choose from more than 20 locally owned restaurants serving flavors from around the world. Whether you’re craving comfort food or want to try something totally different, there’s always a table for one (or two, or ten). Check out the Dining Scene.

🧘 Love Your Body

Treat yourself to the kind of self-care that makes you feel like your best self. Sign up for a yoga or pilates class, book a steam bath or red light therapy session at Cedar Rose Spa, or just schedule the kind of slow morning you’d never allow during the week.

Falling in love with Fairfield isn’t about big gestures.
It’s about little ones. Quiet ones. Delicious ones.
And sometimes, it’s about showing up for yourself and discovering a town that makes it easy to feel good doing it.

Ready to plan your not-a-date day?

Holiday, Romance

Places to Propose in Fairfield, Iowa

By Visit Fairfield | February 6, 2025

Planning to propose is a monumental step, and choosing the perfect spot can make the moment truly unforgettable. Fairfield, Iowa, with its blend of natural beauty and charming locales, offers several idyllic settings to pop the question. Let's explore some of these enchanting spots that could serve as the backdrop to your love story.

1. The Gazebo in Central Park – A Classic and Timeless Proposal Spot

Right in the heart of Fairfield, the Central Park gazebo is a simple yet beautiful place to ask one of life’s biggest questions. Whether it’s a quiet afternoon or a moment under the evening lights, this spot gives you just the right mix of charm, history, and intimacy to make your proposal feel truly special.

2. Along the Fairfield Loop Trail – A Simple Spot for a Life-Changing Question

Sometimes, the best moments happen in the quietest places. A bench along the Fairfield Loop Trail offers a private, peaceful setting where you can pause, take in the beauty around you, and ask the most important question of your life.

3. Lakeside at Pleasant Lake – A Scenic Backdrop for the Perfect “Yes”

There’s something about being by the water that makes big moments feel even more meaningful. Whether it’s during a sunset stroll or a quiet afternoon by the lake, Pleasant Lake gives you a naturally beautiful, down-to-earth setting to start your next chapter together.

4. Petra Park

Located just off the downtown square, Petra Park offers a modern, elegant setting that feels both intimate and special. Its pergolas, raised planter beds and thoughtful design create little vignette moments perfect for a surprise proposal. The mix of architectural elements and greenery gives couples a backdrop that’s timeless and photograph-ready, whether you’re popping the question at golden hour or under the soft glow of evening lights.

5. In front of the stained glass at the Fairfield Arts & Convention Center

The Fairfield Arts & Convention Center is one of the cultural gems of downtown Fairfield, with striking stained-glass features that make for dramatic and artful photos. Proposing here blends the feeling of a big, bold moment with the warmth of a community arts space. After the proposal, you can wander around the center or stroll the downtown square for more candid shots and celebration.

6. Maharishi Vedic Observatory

For couples who love the unusual, the Maharishi Vedic Observatory in Maharishi Vedic City offers a proposal setting that is both contemplative and visually striking. This open-air collection of ancient-inspired instruments makes for a backdrop unlike anything else in southeast Iowa. The geometry of the sundials and the play of shadows throughout the day provide endless creative photo opportunities, and the peaceful atmosphere feels fitting for a life-changing question.

7. Abingdon Peony Farm

There’s something inherently romantic about a field of blooming peonies, and Abingdon Heirloom Peony Farm provides just that during its brief peak blooming season around Memorial Day each year. The lush, fragrant blossoms create a naturally stunning setting for a proposal — soft petals, saturated color and a feeling of being in your own secret garden. Just be sure to time your visit during peak bloom for the best experience and photos.

By Visit Fairfield | February 6, 2025

Whether you're vibing over cocktails, getting artsy, or braving the cold for a winter adventure, these date ideas are the ultimate way to heat things up—literally and figuratively.

  1. Sip & Swoon at La Notte

Kick things off with a little liquid courage at La Notte. Picture this: you and your date, snuggled up in a warm, dimly lit corner, sipping on an espresso martini like you’re in some steamy romance movie. Pair that with some playful banter, and you’ve got yourself a date that’s chef’s kiss perfection.

  1. Wine & Dine at Veraison Wine Bar

Whether you’re a wine snob or just here for the aesthetic, this spot is prime for clinking glasses, sharing secrets, and pretending you know the difference between a cabernet and a merlot.

  1. Retail Therapy (Because Romance = Thoughtful Surprises)

Fairfield’s boutique scene is next-level adorable, and a little shopping date? Total win. Wander through Adela’s or At Home Store to pick out something cute for each other. Who doesn’t love a date that ends with a surprise gift? It’s giving thoughtful, it’s giving charming, it’s giving let’s do this again.

  1. Get Lost in the Art (and Each Other) at ICON Gallery

Feeling artsy? Head to ICON Gallery, Americus Gallery, or Freeform Gallery and immerse yourselves in some seriously cool contemporary art. Whether you’re interpreting abstract paintings like pros or just making up wild backstories about the sculptures, this date is all about connecting over creativity. Bonus points if you accidentally brush hands while pointing at a painting.

  1. Zen Out with a Sound Bath Experience

Because sometimes the best kind of date is one where you both just chill. A sound bath session at Source Vibrations is basically a vibe—relaxing, meditative, and perfect for couples who want to connect on a deeper level (or just need a break from their chaotic lives). Lay back, let the soothing sounds wash over you, and emerge totally refreshed and more in sync.

  1. Slurp some noodles at Asian Pho Bistro

Winter date rule #1: comfort food is king. And nothing hits like a steaming bowl of pho from Asian Pho Bistro. Get cozy over a hot bowl of noodles, some crispy spring rolls, and a shared flask of hot sake. It’s warm, it’s delicious, and it might just be the cure for the winter blues and awkward small talk.

  1. Toast with Cider at Fishback & Stephenson Cider House

If your ideal date involves flannel, a rustic setting, and a boozy beverage, then Fishback & Stephenson Cider House is your spot. Their locally brewed cider is like a hug in a mug, and the chill, laid-back atmosphere makes it the perfect place to just be with your person.

  1. Embrace Your Inner Snow Bunny on Fairfield Loop Trail

If you’re the adventurous type (or just need an excuse to hold hands for warmth), bundle up and hit the Fairfield Loop Trail for a winter walk. If there’s snow, go full winter wonderland mode and rent some snowshoes. It’s like hiking, but way more fun because you’re literally walking on snow.

  1. Culture & Cuddles at Fairfield Arts & Convention Center

Live music? Comedy shows? A little theatrical magic? The Fairfield Arts & Convention Center is serving up all the artsy, fun vibes for the perfect indoor date. Snag some tickets, dress up a little, and impress your date with your cultured and sophisticated side.

  1. Keep the Night Going: Live Music or Billiards Battle

Not ready to call it a night? (Good, neither are we.) Head over to Café Paradiso for live music in a seriously intimate setting—ideal for those hand-on-knee, soft-smile, lost-in-the-moment kind of dates. Or, if you’re in the mood for something a little more playful, grab a cue and challenge your date to a round of billiards at Mad Hatter’s. Just remember: loser buys the next round.

BONUS: Ready to make that big leap?  The perfect ring is waiting for you at Americus Diamond!

Time to Make Some Winter Magic

Fairfield might be chilly this time of year, but these date ideas are heating things up. Whether you’re toasting with cider, getting lost in art, or laughing over a game of pool, there’s no shortage of ways to turn up the romance. Now, grab your person and go make some memories!

5 Fun Summer Date Night Ideas

By Jessica Hatchette | June 15, 2021

Summer Date Night in Fairfield

Three years ago I lived in Washington D.C., a place bursting at the seams with unlimited activities and nightlife. I thought I had it all until I came to Fairfield and found everything I didn’t know I was missing. Since 2018, I’ve been spending my time exploring and researching my favorite corners of this charming, Iowa town, and it has produced some of the best backdrops for my favorite date experiences. Here are my top five summer date night ideas:

Fairfield First Fridays

Why just date one person when you can date your whole community? This monthly event held on the first Friday of the month sparks joy. It’s a great date night for a couple or a large group of friends. Music, food, vendors, glow sticks, games and activities, art, shopping, and friends all come together to bask in this fun vibe on the Fairfield town square. By the end of the evening, people are dancing, new smile lines are ironed into our happy faces, and we’re truly spirited into the weekend to begin a new month.

The Best Night Out Is a Night In

This is my personal top pick for couples with kids and busy lives who just need a night away. The AmericInn by Wyndham has suite number 324, which boasts a large hot tub, large sitting area, comfortable king-size bed, and more than enough fluffy pillows. The hotel also has an indoor pool, daily happy hour, and casual morning breakfast. We like to stop by Shokai or India Cafe to pick up a delicious dinner, and serve it up in the cozy living room while enjoying a competitive game of rummy. We also packed our favorite flavors of sparkling water and a bottle of champagne for the evening. Who doesn’t like a break from parenting while enjoying good food, hot tubs, bubbles, card games, and quiet connection for a night? Five stars!

A Quiet Night on the Water

A good date should include time for intimacy and connection, but that’s not limited only to physical connection. When we connect to each other while we’re connecting with nature, fireworks are bound to spark! There’s something that is deeply fulfilling about hopping in kayaks, dipping in at Waterworks Park, and engaging in a heart-connecting conversation while experiencing the intimacy that only comes when you’re in nature.

Comfort Food and Billiards

Hear me out: dates aren’t only for you and your main squeeze, and you should make time to date your friends! If you’re looking for a great group date that includes good food and some game time, look no further than Mad Hatter!  The food is yummy comfort food and the billiard tables make for some friendly competition (loser buys dinner??) It’s hard to beat this ambiance if you want a great night out.

Putting the Romance into Staying at Home

By Visit Fairfield | April 9, 2020

Even though they might be the love of your life, we know that being cooped up together can create some challenges for relationships. So we put together some date night ideas that also help support local businesses.

At this time, due to growing health concerns, all local restaurants have been ordered to close their dining facilities. many have chosen the option to continue delivery and curbside pickup services. For a listing of those restaurants, go here.

Set the Mood
Set the mood for a relaxing evening with some aromatherapy from Thymely Solutions. Or perhaps you will want to pick up some of their Himalayan Bath salts and unwind a bit from a day of working remotely. Thymely Solutions offers curbside pick up and delivery. We suggest also grabbing some amazing chocolate while you’re at it.

Dinner for Two
You might not be able to take your sweetie out but you can still have a romantic dinner for two with the help of local restaurants' takeout and delivery services.
But it wouldn't be a romantic dinner without some candlelight! Kara from Adela's can set you up with some beautiful candles and other goodies for your table. She's offering online shopping as well as personal shopping and pickup. Just give her a call.

Add a little Vino
Need a special wine for the occasion? Check out Somm Wines recommendation for romantic libation. The Los Dos Garnacha, which means “The Two,” is a great date wine and available for curbside pickup. Krista might also be able to whip up a yummy cheese plate for two! Call in your order; 702-528-8101

Need a little background music?
Check out Fairfield talent Nicholas Naioti on spotify.

Whip it up (in the kitchen)
Cooking together can be one of the best bonding activities. If you are stumped about what to make, we recommend that you purchase the McElhinny House cookbook. These time tested recipes will create a new adventure in taste and spark some fun in the kitchen. Check out their lasagne recipe or maybe stir up some lemon bars for dessert. Contact Julie Johnston (319-695-3037) to get your hands on their cookbook.

Popcorn and a movie
Nothing finishes up a romantic date night like popcorn and a movie. While you're cuddled up on the sofa, check out some movies that were made right here in Iowa, such as The Bridges of Madison County, starring Clint Eastwood and Meryl Streep or Country With Jessica Lange and Sam Shepard.
